2、ineers, UK Summary Recent research and development in the area of design methodologies related to safety and reliability of ship structures is reviewed, focusing on some relevant probabilistic approaches used for the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of ship hulls against collapse. Hull girder collapse accident Overall collapse of ships hulls rarely occurs in still water or in waves. Fig. 1 shows a Cape size

5、 bulk carrier that recently collapsed during discharge in port of her 126 000 t of iron ore cargo. While the 23-year-old 139 800 dwt ship has not broken in two, her mid-section is reportedly lying on the seabed, indicating that the hull girder has, in fact, completely collapsed. After having emptied

6、 the bow and aft holds among five cargo holds, buckling collapse took place in the vessels deck while the central hold was still full. It is considered that this incident happened primarily as a result of improper unloading of the cargo from the ship, but there is certainly speculation about the hulls limit state design as well as the relevance of inspection and maintenance.
