This paper is a feasibility study on the factory-to-business (F2B) practice with a programmable logic controller (PLC), a PDA and a PC-based platform for a driller. A PDA is a hand-held humanmachine interface (HMI) which oper

3、ates on a compact flash Ethernet card and embedded VB 3.0 program while a host PC connected to the PLC and AP (access point) station that conforms to IEEE 802.11b. Experimental results show that the PDA and PC-based platforms are able to control and monitor a PLCcontrolled manufacturing system promp

Keywords： E-factory； E-manufacturing；Factory automation. 1 introduction In the late 20th century, e-commerce and business via the Internet has produced a new wave of commerce, which is commonly called mobile- commerce (m-commerce). M-commerce has been defined as any transacti

5、on with a monetary value, either direct or indirect, that is conducted over a wireless telecommunication network 1. With the maturation of mobile technology, such as cellular phones and PDAs, M-commerce promises to inject considerable change into the way in which commercial activities are conducted.

6、 With the growing penetration of wireless device usage and the widespread adoption of Internet, people are looking for ways to access data wherever and whenever they want. Forrester Research 2, 3 estimated that revenues of m-commerce would reach $6.9 trillion by 2004. The advent and popularity of mo

7、bile phone and PDA is changing the dominant marketplace once again. Currently, most of PDA applications are reported with success in the fields of service business, such as banking, booking, ticket purchasing, shopping, real-time news, and download/upload data from database of server. PDAs have been

8、 used to increase both the efficiency of business and quality of customer service. Generally speaking, the advantages for business using mobile devices are two folds. Mobile device enhances the efficiency of communications between employees, customers, and suppliers. Mobile devices also provide more

9、 real time usage of data flexibly. It motivates the research of mobile application for industrial use. In sum, the adoption of mobile applications has altered the nature of change within the manufacturing environment. Factory-to-business (F2B) has become a hotly discussed issue recently 4. Facing th

10、e trend of F2B, this issue revolves around a number of critical questions: What can a PDA do in our factory? How does the mobile device connect to the existing equipment? How much will it cost? In order to establish a mobile manufacturing environment for F2B, in this project, we developed a PDA and

11、PC-based platform to manipulate a PLC-controlled drill machine. The PDA acts as portable HMI by inserting a compact flash Ethernet card and Embedded VB 3.0 (EVB) program interface. A notebook PC connected to the PLC and AP station, which conforms to IEEE 802.11b, acts as a host. Experimental results show that the PDA and PC-based platform can control and monitor PLC-controlled driller promptly.
