Actually, Marullo is a good person, he only wants to help Ethan how to keep a good business. He knows that Ethan is
4、smart but he is too honest. Ethan once owned the store in which he is now working. He went bankrupt because the Great Depression has collapsed the economy of America, many big companies, small companies and stores got bankrupt； and so did Ethan, “Im try to learn you good business so you dont go brok
5、e no more”(24). Beside that, he also sees that Ethan gets bankrupt because of his honesty. In Marullos point of view, he thinks that Ethan is very different from the other people around him. People run a race to get a lot of money using many tricks, including dishonest ways, but Ethan stands in his

Marullo thinks that Ethans way of thinking should be changed in order to get a lot of profit, as stated by him, “ Youve got to learn the tricks, kid, or you go broke”( Steinbeck 22). Marullo tells him that a good business and money cannot be
7、separated. He has a kind of perception about money, money is nice and money is not friendly, but he emphasizes more on the words “ money is nice”, as he says, “ Business is money. Money is not friendly, kid, maybe you too friendly-too nice. Money is not nice. Money gets no friends but more money”(24
8、 ). Marullo thinks that money is not nice when he thinks that he could lose his friends or he could get no friend because of it. He also thinks that money is nice because money can get more and more money. He is one of members of New England society who also follow Americans dream. He wants to be nu
9、mber one； he wants to be rich and has high social status in his society. This could be seen in the way he persuades Ethan to follow his value or most of the Americans value. He gives advice to Ethan to look after number one. he tries to persuade Ethan by saying that actually Ethan does not lose anyt
10、hing if he looks after number one, as he says toward Ethan, “ You got to look after number one. You dont look after one, whosell lo it? You got to learn kid ”(22). He wants Ethan to learn and change his people in the society also does it. People run a race； compete to be number one in the society, t
11、o be rich, and respected. They use every ways, including dishonorable ways, which are full of tricks. Ethan does not simply accept what Marullo has said； he fights back Marullo Ideas. He keeps his honest belief, as he says, “Im not a chiseler, Marullo”(23). He also wants Marullo to understand that h
12、e cannot really cheat or do some dirty tricks only just for the sake of money. Ethan is annoyed by Marullos idea of money and business and he feels depressed.
