Before the advent of social media, journalism used to hold a monopoly on distributing relevant news to the general pub lic. Via social media, societal actors can nowadays address the public directly, bypassing the gatekee
3、ping function of journalism and thereby even contributing to the public agenda. Social media users can share information they perceive as relevant, and algorithms decide which news best serves the interest of the various users. Shares, likes, and comments have become new indicators for the relevance
4、 of an issue. Furthermore, social media like Facebook have a growing importance for peoples news consumption (Nielsen and Schrder 2014). From this point of view, social media can be conceptualized as a competitor to journalism. However, we argue from a journalism-centered perspective that this conce
5、pt is too narrowly considered. Competition is only one side of the coin. Social media do not necessarily replace journalisms gatekeeping and agenda-setting function; on the contrary, they may even reinforce these functions. We define journalism as a social system that “provides the public independen
6、tly and periodically with information and issues that are considered newsworthy, relevant and fact-based” (Weischenberg, Malik, and Scholl 2012, 207). It becomes obvious when we look at the major journalistic tasks of news gathering, news selection, and news distribution that social media may even provide tools to improve journalisms functionality.
