1、CHINA PAVILION He Jingtang Upon entering the south gate of Shanghai World Expo Garden, people would see a massive red building, which is the China Pavilion. The very moment many people see it ,they cant help thinking: What does it look like Some say it resembles a Chinese characteristics and novel d
2、esign, stands for the rising Chinese nation. Its architectural shape, like an ample barn, symbolizes the richness and prosperity of the Chinese people. Each time when we are standing in front of it-the Crown of the East embodying the Chinese wisdom, we hope it would become a source of pride and conf
3、idence for all the Chinese and make the World Expo 2010 Shanghai unforgettable in the worlds history. The design concept and positioning To realize the cultural theme of “Chinese Wisdom in Urban Dvelopment”,the design of the pavilion should embrace the Chinese elements to capture the sprit of the Ch
4、inese people and demonstrate the extensiveness and profundity of the tyaditional Chinese culture. In addition, the design should showcase the characteristics of our time and the cutting-edged technological achievements. To this end, the designers of the pavilion take “Chinese characterastics, spirit
5、 of the time” as the two basic guidelines and conceits in their design work. The designers put the traditional Chinese philosophical concept of harmony into the design of the China Pavilion. Drawing the inspiration from the Chinese cultural symbols,the appearance of treasured ancient Chinese crowns,
6、 and the layout of traditional Chinese cities, buildings and gardens, they create the Crown of the East showcasing the traditional Chinese culture and express the spirit of the time by using modern three-dimensional space construction technique and modern building materias,technologies and environme
7、ntal protection concepts. 1. An interpretation of the crown of the east Unity of heaven and man, harmony in a prosper0us age Uplifted in the middle and rising high above ground, the China Pavilion, with overhanging layers, looks as if were embracing the sky, creating an impression and inclusiveness.
8、 The upper exhibition halls held up by the four big pillars from a giant space where people can element their mind. In contrast, the regional exhibition halls are of lower height and low profile, scattered around and setting off the nation exhibition hall. Characterized by“regional exhibition halls
9、complementing the nation exhibition hall”, such a layout conveys traditional Chinese philosophical concepts of “unity of heaven and man”, “celestial and terrestrial forces in hamony”,and the prosperity of everything. It also reflects peoples longing for an ideal human habitat which is also an essent
10、ial part of the traditional Chinese culture. 2. Dominating the World Expo Boulevard The site for the China Pavilion is of an irregular shape. According to the original design, the main entrance is located a little noth by west to meet the requirements of city road planning. Later, we adjusted the or
11、iginal design scheme by drawing upon the characteristics of traditional Chinese city layout and taking the practical facters into account. In the overall layout design, we integrated and coordinated the plans of the greens located in the north and south in light of the local conditions. In this way,
12、 the Epxo Boulevard under plan is highlighted, and the south-facing China Pavilion assumes a commanding role of all the buildings on the Boulevard. Thus a spectacular and complete urban spatial sequence comes into being and a group of unique symbol buildings take into shape,fuly illustrating the cha
13、racteristics of traditional Chinese city layout and the wisdom contained in the traditional Chinese architecture. 3. A crown symbolizing the Chinese nation With rich Chinese elements, the China Pavilion, as the main building symbolizing traditional Chinese spirit, constitutes a noticeable a noticeab
14、le presence in the huge site of World Epxo.Magnificent and graceful, it conveys the image of a solid sculpture. A symbol building with extraordinary contour design, it kindles the imagination of those who are enchanted by the pround Chinese culture and is labeled as “a gorgeous crown”,“an ample barn
15、”,“a Chinese utensil”,“a huge network”,“a space of bliss”,“a strange of Chinese”,etc.The purpose of public use and the openness of the China Pavilion. The connection part between the Pavilion and the square makes the Pavilion easy of approach. The three-dim tensional facades leave enough space for p
16、roducing the changes of light and shadow and conducting the dialogue with nature. 4. A modern interpretation of the traditional structure Wooden frame is an element of traditional Chinese architecture, which inspired us a lot in our preparation of the design scheme. Bracket is adopted in our design
17、of the China Pavilion to reflect the culture elemens contained in the traditional Chinese architecture. The spatial formation of the Cina Pavilion is basised architecture. The spatial formation of the China Pavilion is based upon the building rules of the traditional Chinese wooden architecture.Whit
18、h the introduction of the modern elements, a three-dimenional spatial formation is created featuring logical coherence, strict structure, and layer upon layer of overhanging beams. The traditional curved lines are straightened, and the building components are no longre as complicated as they are in
19、the traditional Chinese architecture. Expressed with a succinct and frank architectural language, the structure composed of straight lines looks balanced, solemn, and magnificent.While passing on the traditional architectural idears,it presents beauty of modern construction technologies. 5. New Jiu
20、Zhou Qing Yan, acollection of Chinese landscape The roof-top garden of the regional pavilion, named “New Jiu Zhou Qing Yan”,ismodeled after the formation of Jiu Zhou Qing Yan(the nine clear and quiet islands),a scenery in the Old Summer Palace(Yuan Ming Yuan),inheriting the Chinese traditional of”bu
21、ilding a garden with a garden”. The nine islands encircled by clear water symbolize the vastness of Chinese territory while the sceneries on these island represent magnificent Chinese mountains and rivers. Standing 14 meters above ground, the “New Jiu Zhou Qing Yan”covers a total area about 27,000 s
22、quare meters.It will be used for collecting and distributing people during the Wored Expo and serve as a public recreation place after the Wored Expo.As the mainstay of the China Pavilion,the national exhibition hall stands out among the nine new islands,and is named “Yong”which means harmoney,root
23、and source. The other eight”islands”are respectively named as“Tian”, “Ze”, “Yu”, “Ji”, “Lin”, “Dian”, “He”and “Mo”,each of which is representative of a typical climate or landscape in China. 6. The seal characters decoding the Chinese culture and history In the design of China Pavilion, we make artf
24、ul Chinese seal characters to create a special facade effect. There are 31 ventilation holes in each of four facades facing east, south, west and north respectively and each ventilation hole is designed as a red seal. For example, the ventilation hole opend on the metal plate of the east facaed is d
25、esign as the Chinese seal character“dong”which means “east”. As for the China regional pavilion, the exterior wails are designed with seal characters composed of the China regional pavilion ,the exter walls are designed with seal characters composed of the 24 Solar Terms put together in a regular wa
26、y.That is a uniqe way to inherit the code of the Chinese civilization and geography. 7. China red, a color symbolic of “harmonious coexistence of” differents For Chinese people, the red color symbolizes”enthusiasm,progress and unity”, which is the very character of the Chinese nation. That is also t
27、he classical interpretation of the concept of “red color”. To reflect the unique charms of the China Pavilion, we boldly of aesthetic meanings in different historical backgrounds. In addition, the use of red color in large area, the visual distence and angle,plus the human visual illusions, all posed big challenges for the architects who desided to paint the Pavilino red.The experts from different disciplines made field experiments for as
